Counterpoint Workshop

Two voices. Your notes. Hear how the tension resolves.

Challenge rules

    Use 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 (C major). Each box is one beat. Each voice moves to the nearest next note; 12 → 1 rises a half step.

    How to enter a tie: Type ~ in the box where the previous note continues. For example, 8, ~, 6 means play 8, hold it through the next beat without striking it again, then play 6. Typing 8, 8, 6 means play 8 twice—it isn’t a tie.

    Stronger beats are marked ●. Avoid parallel fifths/octaves and both voices moving in the same direction into a perfect consonance.

    Octaves and note names

    1 = C, 3 = D, 5 = E, 6 = F, 8 = G, 10 = A, 12 = B. Upper starts in octave 4; lower in octave 3. If needed, the entire upper voice moves up by octaves to stay above the lower. Use 1(5) to specify a pitch. A six-semitone tie in nearest distance chooses the higher note.
